Some wandering mendicant priests had a donkey on which they used to load their equipment as they traveled. One day, when it died of exhaustion, they skinned it and made drums from its hide, which they then used. When some other mendicant priests met them and asked where the donkey was, they replied that it was dead, but was receiving more blows than it had ever endured while alive.

So too, some servants, even when freed from slavery, are not rid of the burdens of servitude.
