Yuan Jian was a chieftain of the Qiang. In the days of Qin, he was captured and enslaved, but later escaped. Hard pressed by his Qin pursuers, he hid in a cave. They set fire to it, but a shadow in the shape of a tiger appeared and shielded him, allowing him to survive. The Qiang tribes regarded him as divine and acclaimed him as their ruler. Thereafter, his people flourished and multiplied.
