A hunting dog caught sight of a lion and gave chase. But when the lion turned and roared, the dog took fright and fled. A fox who saw him said, “You fool! Were you chasing a lion whose very roar you could not bear?” This fable applies to insolent men who attempt to slander those far more powerful than themselves, only to retreat at once when they meet with resistance.
