They say that when animals could speak, a sheep said to its master, “You behave strangely: to us, who provide you with wool and lambs and cheese, you give nothing but what we can find on the ground, while you share your own food with the dog, who provides you with none of these things.” Hearing this, the dog replied, “Yes, by Zeus! For I am the one who keeps you safe from being stolen by men or carried off by wolves. If I did not stand guard over you, you would not even be able to graze, for fear of being killed.” And so, they say, the sheep too agreed that the dog deserved better treatment.
