A donkey and a dog were travelling together. Finding a sealed letter on the ground, the donkey picked it up, broke the seal, unfolded it, and read it aloud to the dog. The letter happened to be about fodder—grass, barley, and straw. The dog grew bored as the donkey read these things out, and said to him, “Skip ahead a little, my dear fellow, and see whether you can find anything about meat and bones.” But when the donkey had read through the whole letter without finding anything the dog was looking for, the dog spoke again: “Throw it on the ground, my friend. It is utterly worthless.”
