During the Yuankang era of Emperor Hui of Jin, women’s ornaments included pendants in the form of five weapons. They also fashioned axes, battle-axes, dagger-axes, and halberds from gold, silver, ivory, horn, tortoiseshell, and similar materials, wearing them in their hair in place of hairpins. The distinction between men and women is a fundamental principle of the state; hence the different rules governing their dress and food. For women now to adorn themselves with weapons was surely an ominous portent in the extreme. Then came the affair of Empress Jia.
