This, too, happened long ago. There was a man named Atsumasa, who held the title of Minbu no Taifu. In the days of the Lord of Hosshōji, a man called Yoshisuke, or some such name, served as an administrator in the Chamberlains’ Office. He summoned Atsumasa to perform a duty, but Atsumasa declared, “I am not a man to be assigned such work,” and refused to come. The administrator then sent a number of junior attendants to press him so harshly that at last he appeared. “First, I have something to say to the administrator,” he announced, and called for him. When the administrator came out, Atsumasa flew into an extraordinary rage. “What do you mean by summoning me for such a duty? Before anything else, just what sort of man do you take Atsumasa to be? I should like to hear!” He pressed him insistently, but the administrator sat for some time without a word. “Come, speak!” Atsumasa demanded. “First let me hear what you think of me!” At last, under this fierce questioning, the administrator replied, “Nothing in particular, sir. I know you simply as Minbu no Taifu, a man of the fifth rank with a red nose.” At that, Atsumasa could only gasp, “Oh!” and flee. On another occasion, a personal guard named Tadatsune went swaggering past where this same administrator was sitting, dressed in an outlandish fashion. Watching him, the administrator murmured, “What an unremarkable-looking guard.” Tadatsune’s sharp ears caught the words, and he turned back to stand before him. “What do you mean by calling me unremarkable?” he demanded. “I am no judge of what makes a man remarkable,” the administrator replied, “but just now, when the clerk Takemasa passed by, everyone here agreed that he cut a remarkable figure. Since you look nothing at all like him, I thought you must be unremarkable, and said so.” Tadatsune, too, could only gasp, “Oh!” and flee. They say this administrator was nicknamed “the Rough Administrator.”
