During the Taixing era, when Wang Dun was stationed at Wuchang, a great fire broke out there. He mobilized the people to fight it, but as soon as they put it out in one place, it flared up in another. Dozens of fires sprang up in every direction, answering one another, and continued unabated for several days. This was what the old saying meant: “When fires break out wantonly and spread unchecked, even an army cannot put them out.” Here was a subject acting as a sovereign: the yang force had grown overbearing and exceeded its proper bounds. At the time, Wang Dun was encroaching upon the authority above him, harboring a heart that acknowledged no ruler. Hence the calamity.
