Two young men were sitting beside a cook. While the cook was busy with his work, one of them stole a piece of meat and slipped it into the folds of the other’s robe. When the cook turned back and began looking for the meat, the one who had taken it swore that he did not have it, while the one who had it swore that he had not taken it. The cook, seeing through their trickery, said, “You may deceive me, but you will certainly not deceive the god by whom you swear falsely.”
