During a winter storm, a goatherd drove his goats into an uninhabited cave. There he found wild goats and he-goats, larger and more numerous than his own. Neglecting his own goats in favor of the wild ones, he fed the newcomers with leaves. But when the weather cleared, he found that his own goats had died of hunger, while the wild ones fled to the mountain. And so the goatherd returned home empty-handed, a laughingstock.

We should never neglect what is our own in the hope of gaining from what belongs to others.
