A man had a horse and a donkey. As they were traveling along the road, the donkey said to the horse, “Take some of my load if you want me to stay alive.” But the horse refused. The donkey collapsed from exhaustion and died. When their master loaded everything onto the horse, including the donkey’s hide, the horse cried out in grief, “Alas, what a wretched creature I am! What has happened to me? I would not take a little of his load, and now here I am carrying it all—and his hide as well!” The fable shows that when the strong lend a hand to the weak, both will fare safely through life.
