In a farmer’s field stood a tree that bore no fruit, serving only as a refuge for chirping sparrows and cicadas. The farmer decided to cut it down because it was barren, and, taking up his axe, struck it. The cicadas and sparrows begged him not to destroy their refuge, but to leave it standing so that they could sing in it and delight him with their songs. He paid them no heed, however, and struck a second and a third blow. But when he cut into a hollow in the tree, he found a swarm of bees and some honey. After tasting the honey, he threw down his axe and tended the tree, cherishing it as sacred.

People are by nature less inclined to love and honor what is right than to pursue what is profitable.
