In the third year of the Chiwu era of the state of Wu, Yang Du, a man from Gouzhang, was traveling by night to Yuyao when a young man carrying a pipa asked him for a ride. Yang Du took him along. The young man played several dozen tunes on the pipa; when he had finished, he thrust out his tongue and stretched his eyes wide to frighten Yang Du, then departed. After traveling another twenty li or so, Yang Du met an old man who said, “My surname is Wang, and my given name is Jie.” Yang Du gave him a ride as well and told him, “There was a ghost who played the pipa most skillfully. His music was very mournful.” Wang Jie said, “I can play too.” He was the very same ghost. Once again he stretched his eyes wide and thrust out his tongue, and Yang Du nearly died of fright.
