In the eastern countryside of Mao County in Kuaiji lived a girl surnamed Wu, whose courtesy name was Wangzi. She was sixteen and lovely to behold. Someone in her village who knew how to drum and dance in worship of the gods invited her to a ceremony, and she set out. As she walked along an embankment, she suddenly saw a nobleman of extraordinary elegance. He was traveling in a boat with more than ten sturdy attendants, all neatly arrayed. He sent someone to ask Wangzi, “Where are you going?” She told him the whole story. The nobleman said, “I am just on my way there myself. Come aboard and we can go together.” Wangzi declined, saying she would not dare. Suddenly, he vanished. When Wangzi arrived and bowed before the god’s seat, she saw the nobleman from the boat sitting there in solemn dignity: he was the very image of Marquis Jiang. “Why are you so late?” he asked, then tossed her two oranges. After this he appeared to her often, and a deep affection grew between them. Whatever she wished for would descend from the air. Once she longed to eat a pair of carp, and two fresh carp arrived in answer to her wish. A fragrance emanated from Wangzi and could be smelled for several li around, and she displayed many signs of divine favor. The whole district joined in honoring her. After three years, however, Wangzi’s affections turned elsewhere, and the god ceased all visits.
