A bee from Mount Hymettus, a mother of honeycombs, ascended to the home of the gods, bringing Zeus honey as yet untouched by smoke. Zeus was delighted with the gift and promised to grant her whatever reward she asked. She said, “Give me a sting, so that if any human comes near to steal the fruit of my labors, I may kill him.” Zeus was displeased at her request, for he loved humankind. Nevertheless, unwilling though he was, he granted it, since he had given his word. But the sting he gave her was such that she herself would die the moment she struck, for the sting is the very life of this winged creature.
